A ‘digital literacy programme' for inmates lodged in different prisons across the State was launched by Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons, Durai Murugan, on Saturday.

The interactive e-learning content brought out in a CD format in Tamil by the Digital Literacy Exnora aims at delivering basic computer knowledge to prisoners.

The 20-hour course content, christened KnowIT, provides exposure to the Internet and its applications. Users have to follow audio instructions and click on desired options to learn different topics.

“Basic literacy is enough to follow the programmes. Prisoners can learn computer applications without the support of a teacher,” P. Arumugam, regional sales manager of ‘Indiss Infotech,' which developed the content, said.

Inspector General of Police (Prisons) J.K. Tripathy said the CD would be made available to inmates lodged in central prisons and special prisons for women.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Duraisamy said the Minister also handed over appointment letters to some staff recruited to different positions in the Prison Department.

M.B. Nirmal, founder of Exnora International, was present.
